Pepys was a clerk to the Admiralty under Charles II, but he is best known to us for the diary he kept from 1660 to 1670. He attended the coronation of the new king in 1661, survived the Great Plague in 1665, witnessed the London Fire of 1666 -- and recorded it all in his diary.
